When is a Tory not a Tory?

When his name is Rodney Connor, apparently.

On Monday night, when FST 'colourful' independent candidate John Stevenson asked Rodney Connor "Are you a Tory or not, yes or no?", Connor replied "I'm not a Tory and I'm not a member of any party. I will always make my decision on what I believe to be the best for the people of the constituency."

But according to Connor himself, he 'is prepared to accept the Conservative whip'.

So what's it to be – Tory or not? If you take the Tory whip, are you not to all extents and purposes a Tory? If you permit yourself to pick and chose whether or not to support the Tories, then you are clearly not a Tory.

'Colourful' Mr Stevenson followed up by stating the word 'Tory' means 'bandit' in Irish and received cheers and a rapturous applause from the audience. He finished by offering this message to David Cameron, "Go back to England and keep your dirty nose out of Northern Ireland politics!"

This blog is starting to like Mr Stevenson more and more!

I think theres always a problem when "amateurs" are selected as Unity candidates....Connor. Frank Maguire. In essence "Unity" candidates take the politics out of politics.
Stevenson......not seen him on TV but we need a person to replace Eamonn McCann. socialist environmentalist, people before profit and National Treasure. A Screaming Lord Sutch but his heart doesnt seem to be in it anymore.

Likewise we need nutters like oor Wullie Frazer.

Willie Frazer? Just another pathetic embarrassment to unionism, WHAT A JOKE.

unionism has no basis in reality, utterly confused, please tell me why you want anything to do with that bunch of moppets in Westminster, even the word Westminster makes me want to sick up my guts.

Bowler Hats, Queens and Kings, Prince Charles for CRYING OUT LOAD.

What a joke unionism is, a disease deliberately infected upon us by the Scumbag Brits. fo home.

As a matter of interest who else thinks Mags Ritchie is making a major strategic error by emphasising that her party "attends" Westminster?

This blog debases itself by allowing a forum for comments like those of pagasp.

What purpose do comments like that serve?

Describing Brits as scumbags and unionism as a disease isn't going to get us any closer to a united Ireland.

Grow up.

Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit says,

bangordub, not attending Westminster when there is a clear majority for one party suits SF's non-attendance position but when it is likely to be a hung parliament it suits the SDLP attendance position. It is concievable (though unlikely) as is being argued on Slugger that a vote for SF could let the Tories in. It is not a policy I personally favour them changing but it does not at allok look clever in the current circumstances.

According to the a ICM poll for the News of the World newspaper Cameron would have a majority of 4 only if every Unionist MP elected in the north supported the Tories. Which is a big if considering Sylvia Hermon will more than likely win North Down.

The notion that four of five Sinn Féin MPs are going to sit around Westminster waiting to walk into the Commons Chamber take an oath and rescue the Labour Party and Britain from a Tory Government is simply not a runner.
It does conjure up the memory of British business men (was it aerospace???) going to Frank Maguires pub in Fermanagh to try and persuade him to vote on some issue.
The SF philosophy is that Westminster is irrelevant. Frankly in such a scenario there is a "will they? wont they?" game to be played. But I just cant see any SF MP taking an oath.
They have already established the principle that they can do politics without voting on a major issues. And they can represent constituents just as well on everyday issues.....a process that DEVOLVED government facilitates.
The political fall out within republican ranks just wouldnt be worth the hassle.

Oh and as to Slugger O'Toole...lets be frank. Its not what it used to be. Six or eight regulars with an agenda and pursuing it. A coterie of commentators of who are of variable degrees of political nous and political bias.
And a self congratulatory smugness about Sluggers once deserved reputation in Guardian Media page reading circles and Belfast journalism in particular.
Where every local Lunchtime and Glenda is to be supported. Except of course Jerome Quinn who doesnt fit the Slugger profile.

What about Mike Nesbitt in todays Sunday World and last weekend in the Sunday Life? How many more secrets does this man have? How can you trust this man, his wife can't?

Mr. Stevenson is asking the voters to elect somebody who makes gestures. They know that throwing insults at Tories is just comedy. They know that "getting behind" the Quinn Insurance workers is just showing tea and sympathy. It wont get anybody back their lost jobs.

Mr. Stevenson, who is an engineer, sort of reminds you of an ancient locomotive sitting in the Science museum in London. It has nothing to do except let off <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephenson's_Rocket>steam</a>.

Another confused outburst from Jeffrey

Responding to another confused outburst from Jeffrey Donaldson concerning a mistaken story in the Financial Times an Ulster Unionist Party Spokesperson said:

“Jeffrey appears to be thoroughly confused about a whole host of matters. The statement was issued on behalf of both parties – the Conservatives and the Ulster Unionists. Having separated himself from reality, Jeffrey is now fantasising about jumping into bed with Conservatives after sharing a bed with Labour throughout this election campaign.

“It really is quite a strange fantasy.

“From crowing that the UUP has no clout with the Conservative Party, to inferring that the UUP has now taken control of CCHQ’s press office, Jeffrey seems equally confused about the strength of our partnership.

“I am afraid it is Jeffery who is becoming increasingly hysterical, but at least it is nice to see him out and about again.”
